Dystopian Indoor Garden Battle

A few weeks ago we played our annual Garden Battle at Luc's place. Threatening rainclouds and ominous forecasts drove us inside to the somewhat smaller confines of Luc's diner table. Below some pictures of a chaotic game based on the Bog-A-Ten game and this time spiced up with some Martians!

And the weather? No a drop all day.....

Dystopian Bog-A-Ten

Last week we played a massive battle with the Dystopian Wars rules. We decided to mix it up with the classic demo game Bog-A-Ten. If you have never heard of it, click on the link for this magnificent little demo.

We managed to fit 5 players in a day long hunt for the golden Secret of Atlantis, hidden in the Atlantean temple on the center island. Players were tasked with finding clues on the island, using their land troops to battle hostile forts, dinosaurs and erupting volcanoes. All ships were issued the ability to carry tanks and to land their Assault Points as Marines on the islands.

Here you see the table at the start of the game, still very neat.....

Japanese flyer firing at the fortification on the island in the background.

Another overview of the table from the opposite side. Note the KoB fleet landing tanks on the island in the foreground.

Covenant flyers landing walkers on an island, looking for clues to enter the Temple at a later stage.

The central island with the Atlantean Temple, still peaceful at this point...

Sea monsters attacking Brittannian cruiser. Weren´t these an extinct species you ask? Well, after this fight they were....

Various fleets converging on the island in a last bid for the Endgame.

The chaotic battle at the end. Note the tanks and walkers from various factions slugging it out. The cardboard counters are infantry (AP) landing on the island as marines.

And the Winner! Officially he had to exit the table as well, but it was almost five o´clock and the convention was closing, so we decided that first grabs determined the winner.

As this game was a testrun for the Great Garden Battle for this summer, I can look forward to another run in a few months. The rules worked quite well, only requiring some tuning down of hostile cities and monsters.

A very enjoyable day by all accounts!

Massive Dystopian Wars battle

Last night we played a massive -and in retrospect a bit too ambitious for one evening- Dystopian Wars battle. Over 2000 points of Covenant prowess took on a combined Prussian/American fleet. After a three-hour slugfest I yielded the victory to the Allies, having inflicted serious damage on the Prussians but my battleship was severely damaged and my supporting squadrons largely sunk. Here are some impressions:

 My utterly worthless armoured cruisers
The Covenant carrier, with Galen Escorts
The CoAN Daedalus overflying a squadron of destroyers.
 The American battleship.
 Arjan´s Prussian battlegroup
 More Americans...
 The CoAN Epicurus Skyfortress.
Prussian flying cigars

The ferocious battle on the right wing where my Air Fleet mauled the Prussians. No pictures seem to have been made of the left wing where my fleet was reputedly mauled by the Americans....

Dystopian Wars terrain

Since a very enjoyable amphibious game some weeks ago I played with the idea to make some custom terrain for just such a scenario. Finally finding some time I came up with this:

The overall layout of the island inspired by some episode of "Coast" ;o)  The beaches (sand-coloured bits) offer possibilities for an amphibious landing. Fir forests and high ground enable cover and reach for the defenders.

Some small sub-islands were added to create some more interesting possibilities for using the terrain for cover.

The harbour and the highlands. Note the fir trees.

The low point and the airfield that makes the island strategically important.

Detail of the heavy bunker with twin heavy gun turrets placed on the highest point of the island. I used the spare energy turrets that came with the Covenant dreadnought moored offshore on the picture below.

Detail of the airstrip.

Detail of the harbour and its subterranean shelters and warehouses with the heavy bunker in the background and a smaller AAA bunker on the rocky point to the right. A moored cruiser for scale.

Covenant of Antarctica Dreadnought

My Covenant dreadnought, the terror of my enemies and the paragon of destructive naval power is finally finished. With thanks to Spartan Games who were kind enough to provide me with a spare bridge when that part turned out to be missing.

Note the Covenant of Antarctica flag on the stern. I equipped all my capital ships with flags because they just didn´t have that Victorian feel without pompous banners!

Finished my Dystopian Wars fleet!

After going on a mad painting spree this weekend I finished my entire DW Covenant of Antarctica fleet. Well, except the Dreadnought since a part was missing and while Spartan games was kind enough to promise to mail me a replacement, it hasn´t arrived yet. Still, without further ado:

The mysterious Callymachus Time Dilation Orb!

Aristotle class battleship with two Galen escorts

Pericles class Carrier with robot drone CAP . I have 3 squadrons of 5 drone stands and a single recon drone.

Plato class cruiser: 3 of these make up a squadron

Plutarch destroyers. Five of these make up a squadron.

One of my two Ptolemy bombers

One of my two Icarus medium flyers.

A Diogenes class frigate.

And the entire fleet!

I can´t wait to try them out in a game.....
